ED is common and usually treatable. This guide covers what causes it, which tests your doctor may suggest, and how treatment is chosen.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is when you regularly can’t get or keep an erection firm enough for sex. Common causes include diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, stress and some medicines. A doctor can find the cause with a few simple tests, and most men improve with lifestyle changes, counselling or prescription medicine.
What is erectile dysfunction?
Most men have occasional trouble with erections. Doctors call it ED when the problem happens regularly over several weeks or months and affects your sex life or confidence. It becomes more common with age, but it is not a normal or unavoidable part of getting older.
What causes erectile dysfunction?
An erection depends on healthy blood vessels, nerves, hormones and a relaxed state of mind. A problem with any of these can cause ED, and many men have more than one cause.
- Diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol
- Smoking, heavy drinking and being overweight
- Low testosterone or thyroid problems
- Some medicines, including certain antidepressants and blood pressure drugs
- Stress, anxiety, depression or relationship difficulties
When should you see a doctor?
See a doctor if erection problems last more than a few weeks. ED can be an early sign of heart disease or diabetes, so a check-up is worthwhile even if the problem feels minor.
Which tests will your doctor suggest?
Your doctor will ask about your health, medicines and relationships, and may check your blood pressure. Common blood tests include blood sugar (HbA1c), cholesterol and testosterone. Some men are referred for a penile Doppler ultrasound to check blood flow.
How is erectile dysfunction treated?
Treatment depends on the cause. Lifestyle changes such as stopping smoking, exercising and managing diabetes often help. Prescription tablets called PDE5 inhibitors, such as tadalafil and sildenafil, work for many men but must not be taken with nitrate heart medicines. Counselling or sex therapy helps when stress or anxiety plays a part. Other options include vacuum devices, injections and, rarely, implants.

Is erectile dysfunction permanent?
Usually not. When the cause is treated, such as poorly controlled diabetes, stress or a medicine side effect, erections often improve.
Can young men get ED?
Yes. In younger men, anxiety, stress and lifestyle factors are common causes, but a doctor should still check for physical causes.
Is it safe to buy ED tablets online without a prescription?
No. ED medicines are prescription-only in India and can be dangerous with some heart medicines. Talk to a doctor first.
Which doctor should I see for ED?
A sexologist, urologist or andrologist can assess and treat ED. Your family doctor can also start the basic tests.
