Quick answer

Tamsulosin is a prescription medicine for urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate (BPH), such as a weak stream or getting up at night. It relaxes muscles in the prostate and bladder neck. It can cause dizziness and reduce the amount of semen during ejaculation.

What is tamsulosin used for?

  • Urinary symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate)
  • Helping kidney stones pass (off-label)

How does tamsulosin work?

Tamsulosin blocks alpha-1 receptors in the smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder neck. This relaxes the muscle so urine flows more easily. It does not shrink the prostate.

How is tamsulosin taken?

It is usually taken as one 0.4 mg capsule a day, about 30 minutes after the same meal each day. Swallow the capsule whole. Your doctor will decide if it is right for you and review your symptoms after a few weeks.
