Quick answer

Dapoxetine is a short-acting prescription medicine for premature ejaculation in men aged 18 to 64. Taken 1 to 3 hours before sex, it helps delay ejaculation. It can cause dizziness or fainting, so it should not be combined with alcohol or other antidepressants.

How does dapoxetine work?

Dapoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It briefly increases serotonin activity in the nerves that control ejaculation, which helps delay it. Unlike other SSRIs, it is absorbed and cleared quickly, so it is taken only when needed.

How is dapoxetine taken?

Tablets come in 30 mg and 60 mg strengths. It is taken with a full glass of water 1 to 3 hours before sex, no more than once in 24 hours. Your doctor will usually start with the lower strength and review how you respond.

Does dapoxetine help with erections?

No. It only delays ejaculation. If you also have erection problems, your doctor may treat them separately.

Are there non-medicine options for premature ejaculation?

Yes. Behavioural techniques such as stop–start and squeeze, pelvic floor exercises and counselling help many men, alone or with medicine.
