Quick answer

Yes. Stress and anxiety release hormones such as adrenaline that tighten blood vessels and make erections harder to get and keep. A single bad experience can start a cycle of worry and further failure, called performance anxiety. Reducing pressure, sex therapy and sometimes short-term medicine break this cycle for most men.

How does stress affect erections?

An erection needs a relaxed nervous system so blood can flow into the penis. Stress activates the “fight or flight” response, which diverts blood away and makes it hard to stay aroused. Work pressure, money worries, relationship tension and poor sleep can all have this effect.

What is performance anxiety?

After one difficult experience, many men start watching themselves during sex and worrying it will happen again. This anxiety makes erections less likely, which reinforces the fear. Signs that anxiety is the main cause include normal morning erections and normal erections during masturbation.

What can you do to break the cycle?

  • Take penetration “off the table” for a few weeks and focus on touch and pleasure
  • Talk openly with your partner to reduce pressure
  • Practise slow breathing or mindfulness before and during intimacy
  • Exercise regularly, sleep well and cut down on alcohol
  • See a sexologist for sex therapy, such as sensate focus exercises

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if the problem lasts more than a few weeks. Even when stress seems to be the cause, a check for diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol is worthwhile. A doctor may prescribe a short course of a medicine such as sildenafil to rebuild confidence while therapy addresses the anxiety.

Frequently asked questions

Can anxiety-related ED go away on its own?

Sometimes, once the stressful situation passes. If it continues, therapy and support help most men recover.

Does porn cause erection problems?

The evidence is mixed. Some men find that heavy use affects arousal with a partner, and cutting down may help.

Are ED tablets addictive?

No. They are not physically addictive, but they should only be used with a prescription and not with nitrate medicines.
