Quick answer

Talking about sexual problems is easier when you choose a calm, private moment away from the bedroom, use “I” statements, and focus on closeness rather than blame. Most sexual problems are common and treatable. If conversations keep turning into arguments, a sexologist or couples therapist can help you both talk openly.

Why is it hard to talk about sex?

Many people grew up without open conversations about sex, so they lack the words, feel embarrassed, or worry about hurting their partner. Avoiding the subject often makes things worse: one partner may assume they are no longer desired, while the other feels pressure and avoids intimacy.

How do you start the conversation?

  • Pick a relaxed time, not right after a difficult night or during sex
  • Start with what you value about your relationship
  • Use “I” statements, such as “I’ve been feeling anxious about…”
  • Be specific about what you would like, not only what is wrong
  • Listen without interrupting, and agree to keep talking

What if your partner has a sexual problem?

Problems such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, low desire or pain during sex are common and often have physical causes. Reassure your partner that you are on the same team, avoid taking it personally, and offer to go to a doctor’s appointment together.

When should you see a couples therapist?

Consider professional help if talking leads to repeated arguments, if one partner refuses to discuss sex, or if a problem has lasted several months. Sexologists and couples therapists use structured exercises, such as sensate focus, that reduce pressure and rebuild intimacy step by step.

Frequently asked questions

What if my partner refuses to talk?

Give them time and try again later. You can also see a counsellor on your own first to plan how to raise the subject.

Is it normal for couples to have different levels of desire?

Yes. Desire mismatch is one of the most common reasons couples seek help, and it can be managed with communication and compromise.

Can we have couples therapy online?

Yes. Many therapists offer private video sessions you can join together from home.
